How to Set Up a Facebook Page for Your Business

Benefits of Being on Facebook

With nearly two billion active users, Facebook is an excellent way to advertise your business and give your company a Web presence if you don’t have your own website. (Facebook is definitely no replacement for a dedicated website, but it’s a good start!) Facebook not only allows you to stay connected with existing customers, but it also allows you to create new relationships with those you haven’t done business with yet.

Can’t I Just Use My Personal Account for My Business?

Though many business owners have tried this approach, it ultimately isn’t the best idea for several reasons. For starters, you might want to make personal posts to friends and family that you don’t want your customers to see. In general, it’s best to keep your work and personal lives separate—especially when it comes to Facebook. There are many other benefits to setting up a dedicated business page as opposed to using your personal account, and we’ve listed a few of them below:

  • Facebook Insights: The Insights tool provides analytics that tell you how well your business’s page is performing.
  • Business information: Business pages include an area where you can list your mission statement, awards won, address and phone number, hours of operation, and customer reviews. Personal pages include fields for birthday, gender, and other personal information that doesn’t really apply to businesses.
  • Reviews: Business pages have a dedicated area for customer reviews, which let potential buyers see what other customers think of your company.
  • No limits: As your business grows, so does your customer base. Personal Facebook accounts limit the number of friends you can have, whereas a business page can have unlimited fans.
  • Advertising: Facebook advertising is a great way to reach customers who have never heard of your business. Advertising isn’t available to personal accounts, so a business page is definitely the way to go if you want to reach a broader audience.

My Page Is Complete. Now What?

Posting on Facebook is an excellent opportunity to tell your customers what kind of business you are, what you believe in, and what you sell or install. The trick here is that HOW you post is almost always more important than WHAT you post; that is, be consistent.

Try your best to post the same amount of content each day, around the same time of day. Doing so will teach your customers when to expect content from you. If you only randomly post material, your fans will have a difficult time following your content stream and may lose interest altogether. Current specials, event photos, or videos of successful builds are great to share, but you don’t have to spend a lot of time creating original content. You can also repost industry information you see from pages you follow; if you find it interesting, chances are your fans will, too!

Speaking of reposting, The AAM Group’s free Power Mail™ blog tool makes it easy to create industry-specific posts fast. Simply go to the program blog and browse hundreds of entries spanning new products, rebates and promotions, manufacturer news, and more. At the top of every blog is a link called “Share for Social Media.” Clicking the link will generate a short URL you can copy and paste directly into your Facebook business page: it will create a preview with text and images and link directly back to the blog entry. Power Mail™ does all the work for you!

How to Set Up an Instagram Account for Your Business

Benefits of Being on Instagram

More than 600 million people use Instagram every month. Of those, 70% actively follow businesses using the service. Chances are good that many of your customers (and potential customers!) have Instagram accounts, so the social media platform is a great way to tell them who you are, what you believe in, and what you sell or install.

Getting Started

  • Download the Instagram app from the App Store (for iOS), Google Play store (for Android), or Windows Phone Store (for Windows).
  • Open the newly downloaded app and tap Sign Up. Enter your business email address and tap Next (or you can log in using Facebook if you already have a Facebook business account).
  • Once you’ve signed up and your account is active, go to the app Settings and scroll down until you see Switch to Business Account. Select this option.
  • After designating your account for business, the app will allow you to enter in pertinent business information like store hours, phone number, and physical address.

I Have an Account. Now What?

Instagram is one of today’s most visually oriented social media platforms, so you’re going to need pictures! Be creative and use photos to let your customers know why they should buy from you instead of your competition.

Post unique photos that capture your physical business, employees, projects, and satisfied customers (with permission, of course!). The most important rule is to post consistently. That is, do your best to post each day, around the same general time. Being consistent gives your fans something to look forward to. If you just post here and there, they may lose interest.

Finally, follow other businesses like yours and big industry names to see what kinds of photos they post. Though you should never steal their content, they can inspire you to create your own powerful and unique posts.

How to Get Started with Google My Business

Benefits of Google My Business

Google handles nearly 1.2 trillion (yes, with a “t”) searches per year and is the most popular search engine on the Web today. The company’s Google My Business service allows you to include your store’s information—such as hours of operation, photos, customer reviews, and more—into both Google Search and Google Maps. If you’ve ever wondered why your business isn’t listed on Google Maps but your competitor’s is, there’s a good chance the reason is because you haven’t claimed your Google My Business listing. Claiming has an additional benefit: it puts your business’s name right where people are searching, which can remind previous customers who you are and attract new ones altogether.

My Listing Is Complete. Now What?

First, it’s a good idea to double and triple check the accuracy of the information. If the phone number or address is off by even a single number, consumers may not be able to find you. Then, as an ongoing practice, you’ll want to monitor both your listing’s view count as well as any reviews customers write for your business.

Google My Business is an excellent way for consumers to find your company and get in touch with you. With just a little up-front effort, you can start meeting your customers where they are—and let Google take care of the rest!
